It is true, Windows 2003 automatic updates does not include the Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 update, which is necessary for the iPhone to communicate to the Exchange Server.  Here are the steps to determine if service pack 2 is installed:

1. Open your Microsoft Exchange System Manager
2. Expand Servers
3. Properties of Server
4. Check to see if you see Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2

If you do not, install Exchange Service Pack 2

Test IIS 6.0: OMA, Exchange components

1. Open your browser and type:   http://ipaddressofserver/OMA  (Outlook Mobile Access)
2. Open your browser and type:  http://ipaddressofserver/Exchange (Exchange Web)

Both should connect without any error messages.

There only FOUR components that are typically necessary for a proper exchange – iPhone setup

1. Email Address

4. Server Address (Also known as Outlook Web Address)

1. You need a fully qualified ssl certificate from a authority such as Godaddy / Verisign.   THIS IS FALSE.  You do not need to purchase a certificate for the iPhone to sync with your exchange server.  Save your money!!! Don’t make Godaddy or Verisign rich.
2. You have to install a certificate on the iPhone.  THIS IS FALSE.  You do not need to install any certificates on the phone.  Save time!!  Don’t do it.  It will not improve your chances to sync
3. You need to update your iPhone to the latest firmware:  iPhone 2.2 update. THIS IS FALSE.  If your Windows 2003 Exchange server is configured, your iPhone will connect correctly.
4. Need AT&T Business Data Plan for Exchange to Sync. THIS IS FALSE.  Again, save your money.  I am not sure why AT&T has this ploy.  Their regular data plan works fine with Exchange. 
5. Resetting the IPHONE to factory defaults. THIS IS FALSE.  Have not seen many times where a factory reset fixed a sync issue.
6. Windows 2003 Exchange Server does not support IPHONE.  THIS IS FALSE.  Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 does support the iPhone and it connects.
